Skate park in Hillyard. Hillyard is located in northeast Spokane. The residential area of Hillyard grew up around the railroad repair and storage yards of the Great Northern Railway, the last intercontinental railroad to come to Spokane. The railroad yard and works are now gone. James J. Hill was the main owner of the Great Northern Railroad. The Great Northern is famous for its historic passenger train, the Empire Builder. The Great Northern is now part of Burlington Northern. The Empire Builder is now one of the main routes of Amtrak. See Great Northern Historical Society.
